Social Media Technology in Future Careers

              How I might use technology in my future career field, after college, would be in many different ways.  One way would be using the computer for research. In advertising, if you don’t know anything about the company you are possibly prospecting, or may have as an account- then you need to research information about them, their products or their services. For example, Di Pietro and Pantano said; after conducting this research, I found that, in fact, the fun provided in Facebook, as well as the possibility to ask for suggestions in an ease and entertaining way motivate users in both actively participating in the social life and paying more attention to the products and services promoted via Facebook (2012). This was for research about a specific aspect for consumers’ influence from Facebook advertising. The information was researched and needed in order to know completely if the advertising on Facebook was effective or not. I know 100% I will have to use the internet for research, in order to present things accurately.

            In the career I pursue in my future, I know I will have to use technology in the environment I settle in. People overlook the small things that can be very valuable in knowing how to use correctly. For example, using a copy/scanner machine is something that every person who works in an office typesetting, should know how to use. Though, those are the small things that most people unconsciously neglect.  Being an advertising/public relations major, I think it is important to become somewhat familiar with design programs such as, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, and the like. This is important because there may be an instance that comes up last minute to make changes to an advertisement, but your designated designer(s) are out and unable to complete the task before deadline. If you know how to cope with this and you are flexible enough to work around the obstacles, it ends up working out for the better- in every ones favor.

            Overall, I am well aware that I will constantly be using old, new, and re-worked technologies of all kinds throughout my future career field. Technology has already made endless amounts of advancements in very short periods of time. Therefore, it will only continue to do so more as time goes on. Technology has been changing since the start and in order to be informed and keep up with the innovations, you have to be able to apply the tasks on your own and keep yourself updated on changes/additions.

ArtPrize Technology & Potential


Technology has given us humans an incredible advantage for a number of things. Whether it’d be from a medical aspect, scientific aspect, social aspect, and every thing/anything in between.

At ArtPrize, technology use is extremely helpful and efficient. It is a convenience for people who are constantly on the go. For voting, it is very easy and quick for anyone using the app on their smart phone. This saves them the time of having to try to remember what pieces of art they saw, liked, disliked, etc. It also could be better use in the honesty. Sure, there will be a picture if you were to vote online and not at your convenience, on the go- but let’s face it, the art is always better in person. Therefore, they could be voting for it and be around the artwork, where they will be better able to identify with it.

It has been said on that, “At ArtPrize, spectators and visitors like you take an active role as judge and critic, and an unprecedented top prize is determined solely by public vote.” This explains it all for you. You are able to be the ones judging, instead of a selective group of people.

In At ArtPrize, tech propels urban explorers, Mark Smith said “In the competition’s first year, many weren’t aware of the rich, real-time discussion happening online about ArtPrize, and may have missed out on some of the most buzz-generating pieces of art, ArtPrize executive director Bill Holsinger-Robinson said.” This proves that more people are less likely to vote if it is just online. It is easier for people to interact and become involved with their tech-savvy smart phones.

In the Detroit Free Press, Mark Stryker explains that, “More than 1,500 entries will be on display at nearly 170 venues with $560,000 in prize money at stake — $360,000 awarded by public vote via smartphone, text message and the Internet with the top vote getter receiving $200,000. ” He explains it as “awarded by the public”, I thought this was interesting because it goes to show that the use of the smart phone for voting is at a big advantage for the growth within ArtPrize. In my opinion, I believe it to make the organization and event stronger and stronger as the years go on.

Overall, the use we have on our smart phones for voting at ArtPrize is highly dependable. It is competent, economical and collective. ArtPrize is an amzaing event, not only for the artists that enter, but from the volunteers, the board(s), the employees, to the general public- whether that’d be students, adults, families, elder, or plain old any one! ArtPrize is a great way to bring the community together with the surrounding communities. And to have the public be able to interact while attending the event through their smartphone is helpful for networking & connecting with the people that surround you.

ArtPrize: Technology & Voting


Behind the scenes at Artprize: have you wondered how Artprize was put together so well? I have. For such a big event that goes on for over two weeks, workers and volunteers put things together more organized than I would expect. Having only known about Artprize for just over a year, I am still fairly new to the event. It seems that there are never ending activities, venues, galleries, clubs, sponsorships, and more.

Artprize does not limit themselves to a particular group or age to qualify as a volunteer worker.  Anybody and everybody are welcome to join Artprize’s volunteer team(s). Amelea Pegman published on August 3, 2013 in Artprize’s website, “Students, teachers, retired professionals, working professionals, young and old, it doesn’t matter your background because by opening day everyone becomes part of the team, contributing their knowledge, their smile, and their support for the community.” Artprize is all about getting people to come together, while enjoying each other’s company and creating an environment for the public to also enjoy.

With the easy set up of voting on the Artprize app, the public is able to have a say in the different arts they personally appreciate. With volunteers to help the different directors and workers make this event happen, it encourages the general public to become more involved- in physical and technological presence. This way, they are able to feel more a part of the ongoing two week event, instead of just merely attending.

Rick DeVos acquired the idea of Artprize just over five years ago.  In The Wall Street Journal, John Miller wrote: “So he (Rick DeVos) created the world’s most lucrative art contest, with the biggest winners chosen by the public rather than experts.” This goes to show, letting the public have a say and vote on what they want is much more intriguing than having ‘experts’ do the voting. This, in my opinion, brings more people to attend and be involved in the event, all around.

Being able to do the registering & voting all from your phone, at home, at a friend’s, or wherever it may be- makes it that much simpler. Not only is it an easy, quick way, but in the end continues to grab and grow with more voters for the years to come.
